Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about our software, services, and how we work.
Answers to the questions we're asked most
Most of the questions we get fall into the same dozen or so categories, so we've collected the answers here rather than make you email for each one. If your question isn't covered below, the contact form goes straight to the developer rather than a shared inbox, so a real answer usually turns up within a working day.
Questions & answers
General
What is Digital Fracture?
Digital Fracture is an independent software studio based in Poole, Dorset. We build privacy-first web apps and browser extensions, design and manage websites, and provide managed UK hosting. No investors, no shareholders, just tools that work and respect the people who use them.
Who runs Digital Fracture?
Digital Fracture is a sole-trader operation run by Dave-Lee. You deal directly with the person who builds and maintains everything, no middlemen, no outsourcing.
Are your tools free to use?
Many of our tools are free. RSS Kit, NewsBin, What's My IP, Time Tools, Fingerprint Defender, and Parental Whitelist are all completely free. InfoBin, RSS Ninja, and the RSS Kit Pro extension are paid products. The Retro Media Vault plugins are paid, though the Categories, Canonical URLs, and Sitemap plugins are free.
Where are you based?
Poole, Dorset, England. We work with local businesses across Poole and Bournemouth, and our software, web design, and managed hosting are available to clients anywhere in the UK.
How do I get in touch or report a bug?
Use the contact form. You can also reach us on Facebook and X. For browser extensions, you can leave a review on the relevant store page and we'll follow up.
Privacy & data
Do you collect any user data?
No. Privacy is built into everything we make. Our browser extensions don't phone home or track you. Web apps like InfoBin are zero-knowledge, we can't see what you share even if we wanted to. We don't use tracking pixels, analytics harvesting, or sell any data.
Do your browser extensions collect browsing data?
No. Our extensions collect zero data. There's no tracking of browsing activity, no telemetry, no data sent to servers or third parties. Everything is stored locally on your device and deleted when you uninstall.
What cookies does this website use?
Essential cookies only (session and security). We offer optional analytics cookies that collect anonymous usage data to help us improve our tools, no data is sold or shared. You can manage your preferences at any time.
Are you GDPR compliant?
Yes. We act as data controller and process data under lawful bases including consent, legitimate interests, and contractual obligation. You have full rights to access, rectify, erase, or port your data, and we respond to all requests within 30 days. No data is transferred outside the UK/EU. Full details are in our Privacy Policy.
How long do you keep my data?
Contact form submissions are kept for up to 12 months, support requests for up to 24 months, and server logs for up to 30 days. You can request early deletion at any time via our contact page.
Software & web apps
What web apps do you offer?
Six web apps: InfoBin (paid, zero-knowledge encrypted file sharing), NewsBin (free, 24-hour news aggregator), RSS Kit (free, feed discovery with OPML export), RSS Ninja (paid, full RSS reader), What's My IP (free, IP toolkit), and Time Tools (free, clock and Pomodoro tools).
What is InfoBin and how does it work?
InfoBin is a zero-knowledge file-sharing tool. Files are encrypted with AES-256 in your browser before upload and self-destruct after one view. No accounts, no metadata, no way for us to access your data, the encryption key never leaves your browser.
What's the difference between RSS Kit Pro and RSS Ninja?
RSS Kit Pro is a feed discovery and management tool, it helps you find feeds, validate them, export OPML, and organise with folders and cloud sync. RSS Ninja is a full RSS reader for consuming feeds with nested folders, multiple views, and auto-detection. They complement each other but work independently.
Browser extensions
Which browsers do your extensions support?
RSS Kit Pro and RSS Ninja work on Firefox, Chrome, and Edge. RSS Ninja for Thunderbird works in the Thunderbird email client. Fingerprint Defender and Parental Whitelist are Firefox only.
What does Fingerprint Defender do?
Fingerprint Defender protects you from browser fingerprinting with 10 protection modules. It blocks WebRTC leaks and spoofs canvas, audio, WebGL, and other vectors websites use to track you without cookies.
What is Parental Whitelist?
A Firefox extension that lets you create a PIN-protected list of allowed websites. Any site not on the list is blocked. It's designed for parents who want simple, transparent control over which sites their children can access.
Will your extensions slow down my browser?
No. Our extensions are lightweight and built without bloat. They don't run background processes, make network requests, or load unnecessary resources, so you shouldn't notice any performance impact.
Web design
What web design packages do you offer?
Three managed packages: Personal (£69/month + £199 setup), Small Business (£129/month + £299 setup), and Ecommerce (£229/month + £499 setup). All include domain, hosting, SSL, daily backups, security monitoring, CMS updates, and email support. See full details on our Web Design page.
Is there a minimum contract?
Yes, all web design packages have a 12-month minimum contract. Monthly fees are charged in advance.
Do you use templates?
No. Every site is designed and hand-coded from scratch. No page builders, no template kits, no plugin stacks. The result is a fast, lightweight site built around your specific needs.
Can I request extra work outside my plan?
Yes. Extra edits start at £27.50 for 30 minutes. Feature work and anything outside your plan is £55/hour, always quoted before we start. Priority Support is available for £25/month.
Do you outsource any web design work?
No. Everything is built in-house, in the UK. You deal directly with the person who writes the code and manages your site. No agencies, no freelancers, no offshore teams.
Managed hosting
What does managed hosting include?
Fast UK-based hosting, an SSL certificate (installed and auto-renewed), daily off-site backups, security monitoring, and CMS and plugin updates, all handled for you and billed as one predictable invoice.
Is hosting included with a website build?
Yes. Every web design plan bundles managed hosting, SSL, a domain, and daily backups into the monthly fee, there's nothing extra to set up or pay for separately.
Can you host a website you didn't build?
In most cases, yes. We can take over hosting and maintenance for an existing site, give you a single point of contact, and stop the cycle of expired certificates and missed updates. Get in touch with the details.

What is Retro Media Vault?
A suite of 12 Joomla plugins for building personal media catalogues, covering games (40+ platforms), movies, music, TV shows, books, downloads, galleries, and more. Visit retromediavault.com for full details.
Which Retro Media Vault plugins are free?

Can I get a refund on plugins?

Billing & terms
Do your prices include VAT?
All prices listed on the site exclude VAT. VAT is added where applicable.
How are web design fees charged?
